Duga

Line and form on an immense scale

The Duga radar array was intended to be an early warning system to counter an American first strike. The great irony is that it never actually worked.

One of the world’s largest military structures served no conflict and prevented no bloodshed.

Before I went to the Zone I had seen many pictures of Duga. I knew intellectually how large it was, but I was completely unprepared to experience the actual scale of it.

To call it immense is, frankly, an understatement. It is so large that any attempt to capture it in its entirety fails to show how small everything else is in comparison.
